Children’s dentistry

Our clinic looks after the little patients too.  Our aquarium has a calming effect on them, and the children’s pre-treatment nervousness disappears as they enjoy watching and studying the different fish.

The orthodontists at our clinic:

  • teach children to  clean and care for their teeth correctly;
  • perform prophylactic sealing of the tooth grooves;
  • do fillings in milk teeth and permanent teeth with suitable filling material;
  • treat tooth canals;
  • perform dental surgery.

For fillings in milk teeth we use coloured filling material.  Children like to choose a colour they like for themselves, which helps them to feel involved in the dental treatment and to be more confident in the dentist’s chair.

It is very important that before a visit to the dentist the parents prepare the child psychologically:

  • Tell the child about the coming visit to the dentist in advance.
  • Explain to the child that the dentist helps to keep their teeth healthy.
  • It is better to make an appointment for the morning, when the child is still in a good mood, not tired or irascible.
  • The child should definitely have something to eat in the morning on the day of his dental appointment.
  • Never frighten a child about his forthcoming visit to the dentist.

It is very important that the child visits the dentist not when he has a toothache but in the first instance for check-ups, for a chat and familiarisation with the dentist.  Parents and children should visit the orthodontist for check-ups every six months.

Attention should be paid to children’s oral hygiene right from their earliest infancy, when their milk teeth start to appear.  The most common disease that is not hereditary is dental decay (caries), which is caused by bacteria in the mouth if the child does not clean his teeth or does not remove the plaque adequately.  Therefore children should be trained from their earliest days to clean their teeth.

Children should clean their very first teeth with a damp piece of gauze or a clean piece of cloth before going to sleep at night, likewise after breakfast in the morning.  Before going to sleep children should drink only water, as sweet drinks and tea are harmful to teeth.

When the child’s first milk molars appear (about 1–1.5 years) the child should start to clean his teeth with a soft children’s tooth brush.  In the child’s second year of life he can start to clean his teeth using children’s toothpaste, very sparingly (a speck the size of the child’s smallest fingernail).

Milk tooth caries does need to be treated, as untreated it may cause pain and infection, which may harm the nodes for the permanent teeth.  Premature loss of milk teeth cause an unsatisfactory biting pattern to develop.

As soon as the molars of the permanent tooth set appear it is essential to cover the grooves with a special sealant.   This material fills in the little hollows of the teeth and stops food remnants and plaque from accumulating.  Only healthy teeth are coated with sealant.  If there is caries in the grooves, treatment is necessary.
